                        El Instituto de Jamaica otorgó la Medalla de Plata Musgrave al trombonista Emmanuel Rodríguez (Rico), por su contribución a la música jamaicana, destacan hoy medios
locales.
                        El considerado, de 82 años y uno de los mejores de la isla en su instrumento, se adhirió al movimiento rastafari y se unió al baterista Count Ossie (1926-1976) en la comunidad rasta de Wareika Hills, afirman los especialistas.
                        La influencia del jazz fue decisiva en su música, así como la música cubana de los años 50, reconocen.
                        Durante la entrega de la medalla a Rico también fue laureada con ese galardón la Banda de la Escuela Secundaria Herbert Morrison (1905-1989), por méritos sobresalientes en el campo de la música.
                        También recibieron el reconocimiento el profesor Bryan McFarlane, por virtudes significativas en el campo del arte; y el Festival Literario Internacional Calabash, por su contribución a la literatura.
                        Por su parte, la presea de bronce fue otorgada a la Sociedad de Poesía de Jamaica, por el aporte a la literatura; al doctor Donald Shirley, por méritos en el campo de la música; y a Ebony Patterson, por mérito en el campo del arte.
                        El premio Musgrave se creó en 1889, en memoria de Sir Anthony Musgrave, gobernador de Jamaica (1877-1883), quien fundó el Instituto de Jamaica en 1879.
                        Según datos estadísticos, el Consejo de Gobernadores del Instituto de Jamaica, entre las personalidades distinguidas, confirió en 1977 la Honorable Medalla de Oro Musgrave a la prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, fundadora y directora del Ballet Nacional de Cuba.
                        La entrega del lauro a la figura cimera del ballet en Iberoamérica se realizó durante su última actuación en el teatro Ward de Kingston.

Rico Rodriguez MBE  (born Emmanuel Rodriguez; 17 October 193 ), also known as Rico or El Reco, is a ska and reggae trombonist. He has recorded with many producers, including Karl Pitterson, Prince Buster and Lloyd "Matador" Daley. He is known as one of the first and most distinguished Ska artists
    Rodriguez was born in Cuba and moved with his family to Jamaica at an early age. He grew up in Kingston, Jamaica and was taught to play the trombone by his slightly older schoolmate Don Drummond at the Alpha Boys School In the 1950s, he became a Rastafarian and became closely musically related to rasta drummer Count Ossie.
   In 1961, he moved to the UK and started to play in reggae bands there. In 1976, he recorded the album Man from Wareika under contract with Island Records. In the late 1970s, with the arrival of the 2 Tone genre, he played with ska revival bands such as The Specials . One of his most notable performances was on The Specials` song, "A Message to You, Rudy.
    Rodriguez also helmed his own outfit, /Rico and the Rudies/, to yield the albums Blow Your Horn and Brixton Cat.
   In 1995, Island Records released the album /Roots to the Bone an updated version of
Rodriguez`s earlier work, /Man from Wareika/.
   Since 1996, amongst other engagements, he has played with Jools Hollands Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and he also performs at various ska festivals throughout Europe with his own band. He performed with Holland at Jools Annual Hootenanny, 2011.
    He was awarded an Order of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace on 12 July 2007, for services to music.
   In October 2012 he was awarded the Silver Musgrave Medal by the Institute of Jamaica
in recognition of his contribution to Jamaican music.
